Top Ten: Popular Flowers for 2005 and 2006 in Canada




Production of Plants statistics are one of the hardest things to come by especially for potted plants or plants grown at green houses. This list represents the top ten grown plants for 2005 and 2006 in Canada. Some of these plants are potted and some are variations of species of plants however, those are specified. This list does not include all of the plants that were grown in substantial amounts but more data can be found in the resources. The report written by the Greenhouse Sod and Nursery Industry contains alot of information about the number of workers in the industry and area used to grow these plants. Information about the plants was provided by wikipedia.

Flowers and Plants
"Growers reported $1.52 billion in sales of flowers and plants in 2006. The largest purchases of these products were wholesalers followed by the public. Potted plants had the highest sales with $679 million in revenue. The most popular potted plants were Geranium and Tropical varieties." -Statistical Agency of Canada

Greenhouse
"Area dedicated to growing greenhouse products continued to expand settling just short of 230 million square feet. Slightly more than half of the area was used for growing flowers and plants while the remaining 48% was dedicated for vegetables. Although the area distributions are similar, flower and plant sales make up 65% of the total greenhouse sales versus 35% from vegetables. Operators reported total sales of $2.34 billion in 2006 making it the best year ever." -Statistical Agency of Canada
Greenhouse and potted plants represent a multi-billion dollar industry making them important to the economy of various regions. These plants provide jobs, money, and beauty to the areas they are grown in.
